Plumbing Companies Experience New Challenges in Marketing and Advertising

We have seen many changes over the past several years due to the economy. However one change which may or may not have anything to do with the economy is in how plumbing companies do the bulk of their advertising and promotion for their company. plumber Riverside

For many decades the main method of advertising for residential and commercial plumbing companies has been the yellow pages. The yellow pages grew and grew into huge books and some major cities evolved into having up to 5 or 6 big books that if companies wanted to compete, they had to have a major presence in each book. The cost to keep up with this became extremely high and some of the yellow page publishers became complacent knowing that they had a monopoly on this market. Prices kept going up and plumbers have gotten to the point that they were complaining about the high prices, aggressive sales techniques, and just the overall attitudes of the publications.

Along comes the internet and a major campaign to “Go Green”. Now things are starting to change. In some areas of the country, municipalities no longer allow the yellow page companies to drop the book on everybody’s doorstep. In some areas the only way a consumer can get a yellow page book is to request it directly from the company. People are beginning to realize that the yellow pages are costly and very wasteful from an environmental perspective. We now have the ability to search on the internet with our computers and phones, so why waste all that paper? More people are saying enough is enough! Stop destroying the rainforest and ruining our environment.

The internet has created many changes in our lives and I believe that it is in the process of destroying what was once the main advertising portal for most plumbing companies. When the internet first started, companies were told that they needed a website, just like you need business cards and that was it. Now we have audio, video, pop-ups, coupons, specials, blogs, E-zines, Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, etc. that can all be part of an effective campaign to promote a plumbing business. This change has been accelerated by the demands of the consumers. Consumers want instant results, coupons, specials, video, reviews, etc and the yellow pages cannot provide what the consumer demands.

For a plumbing company to grow and prosper, they must get a large part of their advertising and marketing on the web. Some companies are doing this in-house, but many are using outside companies to manage this task. It can sometimes be a daunting task to find a reputable company that works with honesty and integrity and has the technical skills to put together and manage an effective on-line campaign. These companies are out there. I suggest contacting your local SBA or SCORE office and get a referral of an internet marketing company that someone else can give a testimonial based on experience. The other way to find a good company that does internet marketing is by going to a local networking group and finding out who other local business people use and recommend. It is a good idea to speak with at least 3 different companies to determine the one that is the best fit for your business. I prefer to meet and talk with someone directly when contracting for these types of services. This is one area where it pays to take your time, do your research and make an informed decision before moving forward!
